SAAFON is highlighting in 2012 four farmers from our Network. These farmers have done an outstanding job not only in successfully growing and marketing their organic crops, but also in the role they have played in educating their communities about sustainable agriculture. We are proud to have these model farmers as members of SAAFON.
HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAMS
Jannie and Rocky Dickson - South Carolina
Jannie and her husband started out as gardeners to provide some healthy vegetables for their table. Needless to say the "farming bug" took them over and they are now certified organic growers. Their 40 acre farm provides them with enough vegetables for a farmers markets in three locations and a flourishing CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). They are serious seed savers of heirloom varieties. But that is not all they do. Jannie has been in the news for advocating for and support of farmers in the state of South Carolina. She was instrumental in bringing to the table the state's need to provide the Cost Share Program to organic farmers in the state. She is a state representative on SAAFON's Advisory Board
Yasin and Elaine Muhaimin - Louisiana
This husband and wife team has quite a story. Evacuated from New Orleans as a result of hurricane Katrina, they moved to Zachary, LA and developed a multi-facetted sustainable enterprise that includes pastured poultry, organic vegetables, hibiscus project, value added products and farmer's markets. Starting from scratch after the hurricane was a struggle. But the Muhaimin's made it work and still took the time to stop and train other farmers along the way. They also took the time to work with children in partnership with Louisiana State University in a community project called the Experience Summer Youth Program. Children have the opportunity to visit local farms and learn about good foods and the value of eating healthy.
